Architectural Record and BusinessWeek Honor “Good Design is Good Business” Award Winners
New York – October 13, 2008 – Architectural Record and BusinessWeek presented their 11th annual “Good Design Is Good Business” International Awards to six firms, owners and projects in New York on October 7. A jury of editors selected these winners from 90 nominees, based on rigorous standards that reviewed their use of innovative architecture to produce exemplary designs and achieve measurable business and community-benefitting results.
The winning projects and the architects and clients responsible for them include:
- Alley24, designed by NBBJ Architects and owned by Vulcan Real Estate, Seattle, WA
- Edmunds.com, designed by STUDIOS Architecture and owned by Edmunds.com, Santa Monica, CA
- Elm Park Mixed-Use Development, designed by Bucholz McEvoy Architects Limited and owned by Radora Developments Ltd., Dublin, Ireland
- One Haworth Center, designed by Ralph Johnson at Perkins + Will Architects and owned by Haworth Inc., Holland, MI
- Poly International Plaza, designed by Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill and owned by Poly Real Estate Group, Guangzhou, China
- Sidney Harman Hall, designed by Diamond and Schmitt Architects and owned by Shakespeare Theatre Company, Washington, D.C.
“Everybody, architects and clients, seems to love the BW/AR award because it goes beyond a beauty contest,” said Robert Ivy, FAIA, vice president and editorial director for McGraw-Hill Construction and editor-in-chief of Architectural Record, in a blog post following the event. “Certainly, we love projects that achieve some kind of smashing aesthetic, but in this case, we love proof of performance, too. Did a project increase productivity, did it result in increased media attention, or reposition a company?”
“This award is not about pretty edifices or architectural flourishes, though as it happens there are plenty of those, too,” said Helen Walters, innovation and design editor for BusinessWeek.com. “The benefit to a business’ bottom line is paramount here. Architects have to dig deep to prove a project’s effectiveness, and that truly differentiates this award program from others.”
The awards were presented during the Innovation 2008: The Net-Zero Energy Buildings Conference on October 7-8. For more information, articles, blog posts, videos and photos, visit ArchitecturalRecord.com or http://construction.com/events/innovation2008/.
Complete coverage of the winners is in the November issue of Architectural Record and online at ArchitecturalRecord.com. It will also be covered in the December 15 issue of BusinessWeek and will be on BusinessWeek.com by December 4.
