EDAW Selected to Develop Plan for Beijing Olympic Aquatic Park

(archrecord.construction.com - 12/09/03)

By Sam Lubell

EDAW has been selected to develop the Master Plan for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Aquatic Park, and lead a team in the park’s design.

Occupying 748 acres in the Shunyi District of Beijing, adjacent to the Olympic Equestrian Center, the park will host canoe and kayak events during the games.

The project contains two large waterways, viewing stands, athletes' facilities, green spaces, and other elements still in planning stages. It is meant, points out EDAW Shanghai managing principal Andross Chan, to position Shunyi as a thriving Olympic "river town."

"This project is a catalyst that will reinvigorate Shunyi. Our scheme draws from Shunyi’s culture, history, commerce and natural river setting to identify a range of international-class recreational experiences and facilities," he says.

The park will be EDAW’s 28th Olympic project since 1976, the firm says.
