The Western Red Cedar Lumber Association and the Cedar Shale and Shingle Bureau invite entries in the Western Red Cedar Architectural Design Awards program honoring design excellence and architectural accomplishment using western red cedar.

The award categories are:

Residential
Resort/Vacation
Commercial/Non-Residential
Landscape/Outdoor Living (WRCLA only)
Specialty Shingle Display (CSSB only)

Meet the Jury:  
James L. Cutler FAIA

James L. Cutler FAIA, is a Registered Architect and founder of Cutler Anderson Architects, a firm that is nationally known for its environmental awareness, attention to detail and  design excellence.  They have received six National Honor Awards from the AIA and over 40 other national and regional awards. Jim has served as a juror for several regional and national competitions and has held teaching positions at numerous prestigious colleges and universities, currently at Dartmouth College, where he had been chosen “Artist in Residence” for Spring Quarter 2004.  He holds a Master of Architecture degree from the Louis I. Kahn Studio program and both Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.  He has lived on Bainbridge Island since 1974 and is a founding Board member of the Bainbridge Island Land Trust.

   
Martin Finio

Martin Finio, co-founder, together with his wife Taryn Christoff, of Christoff:Finio Architecture, is a graduate of the Cooper Union in New York. Before launching the firm in 1999, he was an associate at Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, where he headed such National AIA Award winning projects as the Cranbrook Natatorium, and the Go Silk showroom. He was guest editor of the 1999 monograph Williams Tsien: Works, and was a recipient of a grant from the NYS Council on the Arts. He has taught at Columbia University and is currently teaching at Yale. He has also lectured extensively at leading universities and the Architectural League.  Christoff:Finio quickly established themselves as a collaboratively driven practice and award-winning team.  Among the many accolades, they were cited in 2002 as one of twenty-five “best new architectural talents” worldwide by Wallpaper Magazine and were one of 11 firms selected worldwide for Architectural Record’s 2004 “Design Vanguard” issue.  The July 2005 issue of Esquire magazine named Martin Finio one of America’s most promising young architects. 

   
Ellen Watts

Ellen Watts AIA, LEED, is a co-founder and principal of Architerra, a Boston-based architecture and planning firm dedicated to advancing sustainable design.  The Architerra-designed Garthwaite Center at the Cambridge School of Weston in Massachusetts is recognized by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 2008 Top Ten Green Buildings.  A graduate of Smith College, Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Real Estate, Watts is a recognized design industry leader and frequent presenter and author.

 

How to enter:  
  • All entries must be submitted online.
  • Entrants must provide a minimum of 3 images of the project including one front elevation shot.
  • If entry is a remodel or renovation project, entrant must provide at least 2 additional “before” images.
  • Entrant must provide 250 word project description with particular comments on why western red cedar was selected.
  • A CD of the high-res images of the submitted entries is to be provided to the WRCLA and CSSB upon request (WRCLA/CSSB receives unlimited usage rights, but not ownership, of the high-res images)
  • The WRCLA/CSSB and their members receive the right to profile the submitted projects in marketing campaigns including online, print, displays, etc. promoting Western Red Cedar.
  • WRCLA and CSSB respect the privacy of property owners. Property owner name(s), contact information and property addresses are not to be included in award entries unless such information is also that of the architect, builder or photographer to be credited for the job.
