General Session I - Innovative
Project Financing in the International Construction Markets
Money makes the world "go around" in construction
as much as in any industry. In the global arena, owners are
always looking for new funding sources and innovative arrangements
such as public-private partnerships and public finance initiatives.
Our panel of experts will explore financing structure, the
role of international lending agencies, and the regulatory
design needed to build a framework for the private sector
to participate. Speakers will consider how to create an Asia
bond market-an investment vehicle for infrastructure to attract
long-term retirement assets. And they will consider options
for private developers and long-term building programs in
commercial and residential markets.

Dr. Joseph Hu, China country head, managing director,
Standard & Poor's Dr.
Joseph Hu presentation
Li Jun, vice president, China Eximbank
James H. Zhan, vice president, Bechtel Enterprises

Breakout Session I -
Old China Meets New World - Qing Pu's Urban Planning
With major urban centers such as Beijing and Shanghai getting
most of the world's attention, can smaller towns and cities
in China reinvent themselves for the 21st century? Can physical
planning and architecture create new urban identities and
energize local economies in these places? Government leaders,
architects, and planners in Qingpu -- an old water village
now part of the greater Shanghai metropolitan area -- think
they have some of the answers. The vice district chief of
Qingpu and three architects will explain how they are using
a combination of innovative new architecture and historic
preservation to transform the town.
Panelists:
Chang YungHo, principal architect, Atelier FCJZ, head
of Architecture Department, MIT

Breakout Session II -
Achieving Zero Incident Rate
Leading global owners and contractors believe that zero accidents
on construction job sites can be a reality. Intel, the global
manufacturing giant that spends more than $3 billion a year
on capital investment, reduced injuries and work-related illnesses
by almost 90% in five years. Its tough corporate-wide construction
safety program has made it an industry role model. This session
will talk with Intel and other prominent players about how
they elevate jobsite safety to new levels.
Panelists:
Steve Bowers, CSP, world wide projects environmental,
health & safety manager, Intel Corporation
Murray Coleman, Chief Executive Officer, Asia Pacific,
Bovis Lend Lease

Breakout Session III -
How to Position Your Brand and Products to Increase Penetration
in the B2B Building Product Market in China
The construction market in China has been booming. For building
material and equipment suppliers, the upside opportunity is
huge but competition has also become fierce than ever. How
to differentiate your brand in such an environment? How to
increase market penetration? Come and hear our panelists sharing
their insights on strategies of brand and product positioning
in China, and telling us their unique stories on execution
in this tough market.

In an increasingly competitive world, many companies are

brand identity, and solve a range of business problems. Winners
of this year's Business Week / Architectural Record China
Awards will discuss how they used design to generate measurable
results.

Managing Investment Risks in Global Mega Projects
A good business management risk framework is a must for international
contractors. Our panel of experts will explore the big picture-from
economic risks, innovation risks and technical risks to others
that are even harder to get a handle on such as social risks,
political risks and religious risks. One good way to control
risk is to control time and expedite project delivery. Another
is to boost safety and productivity, which correlates to profitability.
This session will discuss which solutions are most effective.

Breakout Session VI
- China's New Construction Hot Zones: Voices from the Frontier
Everyone knows that China's major cities are construction
boom towns. But there are mega projects under way in China's
Wild West and in its heartland, as well. This breakout track
will bring in experts from projects such as the Chongzun Expressway,
a 118-kilometer stretch of highway in southwestern Guizhou
Province. Because of difficult terrain, the job required 121
bridges and 17 tunnels. When finished it will forge a critical
link in China's version of the interstate highway system.
Project leaders on this panel will talk about challenges,
opportunities, and how to get work outside the big cities.

China's rapid transformation from a mostly rural nation into
an increasingly urban one has brought with it both economic
opportunities and environmental challenges. As it consumes

ways of incorporating the principles of sustainability and
green design into its planning, design, and construction processes.
Speakers will present case studies of projects they are currently
working on in China.

Session III - Winning Work in Global Markets: A Comparison
of Three Multinational Projects
In today's so-called "flat world" of borderless
technology, money, and opportunity, the players on large construction
projects often come from different countries. The complexity
of these projects, however, can create enormous problems for
everyone involved. If not handled properly, these projects
can become giant business disasters. Representatives of three
multinational teams will show their work and explain how they
handled the flow of information, decision making, construction,
and supervision so things moved smoothly.

Session IV - What Do Global Owners Need?
Global owners need to know how to deliver projects successfully
around the world. Four major owners will share ideas about
how design firms and contractors can help them build better,
faster, cheaper and more safely. Issues on the table also
will include productivity, pre-project planning and the trade-off
between cost and schedule. What are owners' views on offshoring?
Do owners look to ECs to help speed procurement and manage
the supply chain? How are relationships changing globally
with the AEC community?
