Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of XXIX Olympiad organizer (BOCOG)

As one of the three themes of Beijing 2008 Olympics, Green Olympics means to prepare Olympic Games in accordance with the principle of sustainable development, which calls for the protection of environment, conservation of resources and maintenance of ecological balance to enhance city's environmental infrastructure construction through hosting Olympics, to improve ecological surroundings, to widely organize environmental communication and education activities to raise public awareness and leave rich environmental heritage for both China and the world.

Directed by the principle of sustainable development, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX OLympiad (BOCOG) set up its own Environmental Management System (EMS) in accordance with the demand of ISO 14001, so as to manage the environmental protection work of BOCOG through this scientific managing model. The EMS includes Green Office of BOCOG, competition path planning, venue designs, the election of contracted partner and contracted hotel, publication and press, and environmental management. Through a series of environmental protection guidelines, BOCOG can guide the enterprises serving for the Olympic Games to protect our environment.

Among all the aspects of EMS, environmental management of Olympic venue construction is our main concern. For the planning and designing of Olympic venue, BOCOG established the Guidelines for Environment Protection in Olympic Construction Projects, which put up the basic environmental protection requirements for the Olympic venue and construction projects, including requirements for Energy conservation in buildings, environment-friendly construction materials, water resources protection and gardening and greening. All the requirements should be involved into the bid proposal. When the construction of Olympic venue began, BOCOG developed the Green Construction Guidelines for Olympic Projects. It set detailed environmental protection requirements for the construction of Olympic venue. By spreading the Guidelines as formal document of Beijing 2008 Project Construction Headquarters, all the construction units should obey the Guidelines. Besides, BOCOG published two more guidelines, the Environmental Guidelines for renovated venues and the Environmental Guidelines for Olympic Overlays.

Except for the guidelines, BOCOG have been working on the spread of environmental protection technology and productions, including solar energy photoelectric technology, solar energy photo thermal technology, geothermal energy and wind energy applied technology, indoor-air purifying technology, green and energy conservation lights, energy conservation doors and windows, and the popularizing of environment-friendly construction materials.
