Award winning project: Shenzhen Urban Planning Bureau

Goals of the Urban Planning Bureau in Shenzen:

    • Create a new prototype for government offices in China by emphasizing ideals of openness and transparency, as opposed to the defensive, power-architecture that presently is the norm.

The minimal and self-restrained design presents both the modesty and solemnity of a government building, but in contrast to rigid image of typical government buildings, the aim of the architects was to produce a building with an open, transparent and flexible image.
    • Provide comfortable well-lit office accommodation designed to fit modern work patterns.

    • The design uses a double-height office unit as the basic cell of the whole office system. With light steel structure, such unit resides in a predetermined large concrete structural space, and it can grow according to programmatic requirement. Thus the whole office system is flexible to adopt any future changes.

    • Reduce environmental impact and long term maintenance cost by creating a sustainable energy efficient office building flexible in its organization and layout.

    Measurable benefits of good design:

    • Increased productivity. Consideration of thermal comfort, lighting, ventilation and noise issues at the design stage will help to create a comfortable and optimized work environment for employees, leading to increased productivity.

    • Long term economic savings. A well-designed energy efficient and flexible office will deliver considerable savings in the long term as maintenance and alteration costs after completion will be kept to a minimum.

    • Creating a new corporate or institutional image, changing a culture. As the major public face of any institution or company, office accommodation should reflect the ideals and aspirations of the public or private body that it houses. As well as defining the institution or company in the public eye, good design can encourage and inspire employees to help meet these aspirations.
