Harvey M. Bernstein

As Vice President of Industry Analytics, Alliances and Strategic Initiatives, Mr. Harvey Bernstein manages McGraw-Hill Construction’s Washington, DC office which is responsible for industry and government alliances, and manages the company’s Research and Analytics division. He has lead responsibility for MHC’s green building initiatives, including the first ever landmark studies on green residential and commercial construction trends, and the launch of GreenSource magazine. Previously, Mr. Bernstein served as the President and CEO of the Civil Engineering Research Foundation. He has written numerous papers covering innovation, residential and commercial construction, energy efficiency and conservation and sustainability. He co-authored the book Solving the Innovation Puzzle: Challenges Facing the Design and Construction Industry.  Mr. Bernstein is a member of the Charles Pankow Foundation’s Advisory Council, Princeton University Civil & Environmental Engineering Advisory Council, the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Policy Advisory Board and a visiting Professor with the University of Reading’s School of Construction Management and Engineering in London, England, where he also serves on their Innovative Construction Research Center Advisory Board. Mr. Bernstein has an M.B.A from Loyola College, an M.S. in Engineering from Princeton University and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Mr. Lu is now President of Shanghai Green Building Council, Chairman of Shanghai Building Materials Industry Association and Chairman of the Ecological Society of Shanghai. Before taking these roles, Mr. Lu was Vice Director of Shanghai Municipal Construction Commission.

Kenneth Langer, Ph.D.
Founder and President, EMSI

Kenneth Langer is founder and president of Environmental Market Solutions, Inc. (EMSI) – an international consulting firm with offices in Washington, D.C., Springfield, MO, Beijing, and Shanghai. The company offers green building and sustainable design services to real estate developers of commercial properties, retail developements, factories, and mixed-use communities. EMSI pioneered the green building industry in China, and it has maintained its leadership position since it opened its Shanghai office in 2001. Prior to founding EMSI, Dr. Langer held various senior management positions in energy and environmental consulting firms in the Washington, D.C. area. In these positions he consulted to Fortune 500 companies, The White House, the U.S. Department of Energy, and multilateral development banks. Dr. Langer is currently Vice Chair of the National Capital Region Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a former Board Member of the Sustainable Buildings Industries Council (SBIC), and a Founding Member of the Shanghai Green Building Council (SGBC).  Dr. Langer earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1978.

Tom Hicks
Vice President of International Programs, U.S.Green Building Council

As Vice President of International Programs, Tom Hicks oversees the rapidly growing demand for the development and implementation of USGBC’s international efforts. For the two years prior to this role, Tom served as the Vice President of LEED leading the development and implementation of all LEED rating systems. Prior to joining USGBC, Tom spent more than eight years at the U.S. Environ­mental Protection Agency as a Senior Program Manager within the Energy Star for Buildings program. Tom was the principal architect and program manager of the Energy Star commercial building rating system, the nation’s largest and best-known energy efficiency initiative. Prior to the EPA, Tom worked with the U.S. Navy, where he formed the energy efficiency program for the U.S. Navy Public Works Center in Washington. Tom received his bachelor of science in Mechanical Engineering from the Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland and is currently working toward his master’s degree in Engineering Management at George Washington University.

Minda Xu
Vice President – China, McGraw-Hill Construction

As Vice President of China, Minda Xu leads McGraw-Hill Construction’s businesses in this highly dynamic growth market. She joined The McGraw-Hill Companies in 2000 as a member of its Management Development Program, and worked in both New York and London. In 2003, she was tasked to expand McGraw-Hill Construction’s footprint to China. Under her leadership, McGraw-Hill Construction has formed strategic partnership with a number of leading Chinese organizations, and launched new products such as the ENR China ranking, MHC China Council, Architectural Record China, and major industry events including the Global Construction Summit and the Green Building and Energy Efficiency International Conference. The company has established an extensive network in China with the government, major industry associations, as well as local and multinational clients. She was relocated to Shanghai in 2006 with expanded responsibility of overseeing China business development for Platts and Aviation Week, the other two B2B information units of McGraw-Hill. Ms. Xu started her career as a management consultant at the Boston Consulting Group. She holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BE with distinction in Industrial Management from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Janice L. Tuchman
Editor-in-Chief, Engineering News-Record, McGraw-Hill Construction

As editor-in-chief, Janice L. Tuchman directs the editorial operations of the Engineering News-Record enterprise—delivering news and analysis online, in print and in person at events.  She works on strategic planning and develops new editorial products, projects and issues. Under Tuchman’s leadership, the ENR team won two prestigious Jesse H. Neal awards in 2007 for Best Website and for Best Online Series of Articles. In 2008, the team is a finalist for the Best News Coverage and Best Website awards. Tuchman launched the “In Demand” series of magazines for the Dept. of Labor. These magazines connect high schools students to careers in industries that have a high demand for workers, such as construction. In 2002, she became only the sixth woman to be elected to membership in “The Moles,” a prestigious heavy-construction industry leaders organization. She also serves on the Industry Advisory Committee of the Department of Civil Engineering at Columbia University. She co-authored a book on Exposed Structure in Building Design and won McGraw-Hill Corporate Achievement Awards for Information Technology and Editorial Excellence. Tuchman earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Wang Wei

Mr. Wang Wei is currently the Vice Chairman and Secretary General of Shanghai Green Building Council, Senior Chief Engineer of Shanghai Research Institute of Building Sciences, Vice President of International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction, Director of Green Building Technology Research Center of The Ministry of Construction and Vice President of Shanghai Architectural Society. Since 2000, Wang Wei has been overseen Shanghai Scientific Research Projects ‘Key Technology Research and System Integration of Ecological Construction" as the chief researcher, and has been the deputy chief officer of the 10th 5-year plan of the National Science and Technology key project “Research on Key Technology of Green Building” and chief researcher of the topic on the ‘Green Building Technology Integration Platform”. He is also the writer for the "Green Building Evaluation" (GB / T50378-2006 and leads the Ecological Architecture Researchers in studying the Ecological Construction Technology in Shanghai.

Rebecca L. Flora
AICP, LEED AP, Chair – Board of Directors, U.S. Green Building Council; Executive Director, Green Building Alliance

Ms. Rebecca L. Flora serves as Board Chair of the U.S. Green Building Council, which is considered to be the fastest growing NGO in the world with over 12,000 member organizations worldwide. She is also the Executive Director of Green Building Alliance (GBA), a non-profit organization that drives market demand for green building throughout Western Pennsylvania.  As the organization’s first executive director, Ms. Flora was responsible for its start-up, strategic direction, and growth over the past 11 years.  In 2006, GBA launched the Green Building Product Initiative, a program initiated by Ms. Flora to grow Pennsylvania’s green economy through expansion of the green building products industry.

Ms. Flora holds a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Science from Plattsburgh State University of New York.  She also serves as an adjunct faculty member of Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz School of Public Policy and Management.

Shane Tedjarati
President & CEO, Honeywell China and India

Shane Tedjarati was appointed as President & CEO of Honeywell China and India in March 2008, based in Shanghai and reporting directly to Honeywell Chairman and CEO Dave Cote. Mr. Tedjarati oversees Honeywell’s entire business portfolio in China and India, which are among the most important growth markets for Honeywell globally.  With a mission of not only achieving strong growth within China and India, but also building them into Honeywell’s global innovation hub and a platform for promoting Honeywell’s globalization, Mr.Tedjarati will focus on driving the unique East to West strategy to enable China and India to contribute more to Honeywell’s growth in other parts of the world.

Mr. Tedjarati is a Canadian who speaks six languages, including Mandarin Chinese.  He holds an undergraduate degree in computer science and mathematics from McGill University in Montreal, as well as an MBA from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Huang has been involved in Shanghai urban construction and management for many years and was former Secretary-general and Vice Director of Shanghai Municipal Construction Commission.

Dr. Han Jihong is Deputy Director of Institute of Building Innovation, Shanghai Research Institute of Building Science (SRIBS); Deputy Director of Green Building Construction Technology Research Centre of the Ministry of Construction; Member of Sustainable Development and Resource Environment Committee of MOC, CGBC, CIB, iiSBE and ISIAQ. Dr. Han constructed the first eco-office demonstration project named by Shanghai Eco-building, which won the Golden Prize of the 2005 MOC Green Building Innovation Award and many other major awards. Dr. Han also edited, as the editorial team leader, the China Evaluation Standard for Green Building (GB/T50378-2006), Specification for Technical Evaluation of Green Building (2007.6, MOC), Specification for Technology Application of Green Building in 2010 Expo Area and so on, and published Shanghai Eco-building Demonstration Project-Eco office (2005.10) and Eco residential (2006.5). She is currently leading the Eleventh-Five Key Research Projects on Green Building and Human Settlement Environment, and Shanghai Eco-Housing Research, the only one Expo. case from Shanghai at the 2010 World Expo UBPA. Mr. Ji Tao Chen is NY State licensed Engineer and has a master’s degree in Engineering Science from City University of New York.

Michael Sahm, UTC Fellow, Manager of Integrated Green Building Design, Carrier Corporation

Dr. Michael Sahm is a UTC Research Fellow, the Manager of Integrated Green Building Design within the Carrier Building Systems and Services organization and Vice President for Systems integration for EMSI.  In his Carrier role, Dr. Sahm is responsible for leadership of selected internal green building projects for the United Technologies Corporation (UTC). UTC has made internal and public commitments to sustainable development including definition of an internal green factory standard. This standard has led to the requirement of US Green Building Council LEED® certification of all UTC new construction.  In his Systems Integration role within EMSI, Dr. Sahm contributes to early stage advanced energy system design for external clients.

Dr. Sahm is a practicing Mechanical engineer, operating in the areas of sustainable building system design and advanced building system equipment.  His areas of expertise include systems integration, energy conversion systems, integrated cooling, heating and power systems, Turbomachinery and applied thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer.  Dr. Sahm joined UTC in 1983 in the Pratt & Whitney engine business, holds 40 US patents, has been a practicing engineer for 27 years and is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Richard Turpin, Director Project Shanghai, HSBC

Richard Turpin, age 49. Appointed Director Project Shanghai with effect from February 2007. Joined HSBC in 1988 over 20 years experience original based in the London head office until moving to Shanghai in 2007. Responsible for the successful completion and overall delivery of the new flagship head office of HSBC in Lujiazui financial area in Pudong.

Andrew Zheng, President and CEO, Shenzhen Fountain Corporation

Dr. Zheng is Shenzhen Fountain Corporation President and CEO. After his academic studies, he became a Visiting Professor at the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin - Madison USA where he also lectured Economics at the University’s Economics department. Dr. Zheng has to his credit the publication of various working papers on global financial issues. As part of his present position Mr. Zheng has developed various real estate properties in China. Recently he has shifted the focus of the company’s real estate development arm to sustainable development and has initiated the company’s “Going Green” program consisting of Sustainable Real Estate Development, Environmental Management and Stakeholder Participation in Environmental Programs. Dr. Zheng graduated from the University of Harbin with a BA degree in Engineering and obtained a MA degree in Systems Engineering and Computer Science from the Amoy University in Xiamen thereafter. He went to receive a Ph.D degree in Economics and Management from Tsinghua University.

Panel Discussion II – Green Communities – A Look into Neighborhood Development in Asia

K. B. Albert Chan, Director of Planning and Development, Shui On Development Ltd.

K. B. Albert Chan has over 20 years of experience in planning, design and real estate development, including 10 years of experience in China.  He is currently the Director of Planning and Development at Shui On Development Ltd., responsible for the conceptualization and planning of developments by Shui On Land Limited. From 1997 to 2001, he led the overall planning and design effort for the Shanghai Xintiandi development. Prior to joining Shui On, he was a Project Director at the New York City Department of Design and Construction. Previously, he worked at Cooper, Robertson + Partners in New York.

His education includes an M.S. in Urban Design from Columbia University, M. Arch. from U.C. Berkeley, an MBA from the Stern School at New York University, and B. Arch. from University of Minnesota. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute, American Institute of Architects, and American Planning Association. He is a Registered Architect of New York State. 

Sean Chiao, Principal, Regional Director of Asia, EDAW

Sean Chiao is the Regional Director of EDAW’s Asia practice and serves on EDAW’s Global Executive Committee, and is Executive Vice President of its holding company AECOM. An advocate of the firm’s distinct collaborative practice, he has driven the growth of EDAW’s multidisciplinary teams in Asia on projects in both the public and private realm. Mr. Chiao has overseen high-density master plans for new towns and regenerations of existing urban contexts that have long drawn on sustainable themes. He has also spearheaded the design and construction of a number of high profile landscape master plans and major public open spaces in Asia. Under his leadership, EDAW Asia has developed an unparallel reputation addressing a broad spectrum of urban needs through solutions that enhance and measure a project’s success through its economic, environmental and social impact.

Mr. Chiao is a member of both the AIA and the ASLA, and holds a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University and Master of Architecture degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Prof. Li Shirong, Deputy Director of Chongqing Foreign Trade & Economic Relations Commission; Vice President and President-Elect, The Chartered Institute of Buildings

Professor Li Shirong is Deputy Director of Chongqing Foreign Trade & Economic Relations Commission. She is Vice President of The Chartered Institute of Building and the President-elect of CIOB (2009-2010). Between 2003 and 2006, She worked in local government Shapingba District as vice mayor, responsible for urban development and construction. Prof. Li has published more than 170 academic papers and 26 books in both China and abroad. Her academic work focuses on China’s construction industry in transition, sustainable urbanization, government role in construction, construction project management, international construction market and higher education in construction. Professor Li received four British professional qualifications, including the chartered Environmentalist of the Society for the Environment (CEnv), and the Fellows of the Chartered Institute of Building (FCIOB), the Royal Institution of Chartered Survey (FRICS) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE). She has a PhD from University of Reading UK, a MSc degree in construction management and a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from Chongqing Construction University. She is a member of the Industrialised Building Advisory Committee and the Construction Health and Safety Advisory Committee for the Ministry of Construction, China.

Cai Fang, Chairman, Beijing Tianhong Yuanfang Architectural Design Co., Ltd.

Cai Fang got his B.S. and M.S. degrees(HVAC) from Tsinghua University. He is a senior engineer (professor’s class) and a member of Green Buildings Specialty Committee in Architectural Society of China(ASC). In the past 20 years, Mr. Cai has been dedicated to research of green building technologies and green building design. He co-edited the China Green Housing Technical Evaluation Manual and co-drafted The Technical Requirement for Environmental Labeling Products: Eco-housing(HJ/T351-2007). He was in charge of green building design of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Village, which won “the Elite Housing Sci-Tech Award of China (Platinum)” and LEED Certification (Gold) of U.S.

Fu Zhiqiang, Regional Deputy General Manager, Shanghai Vanke Co., Ltd.

As Regional Deputy General Manager of Shanghai Vanke Co., Ltd. Mr. Fu Zhiqiang is responsible for regional planning and neighborhood design of metropolis. There are many masterpieces of Mr. Fu stand in several big cities of China. Mr. Fu Zhiqiang has rich experiences in regional planning and neighborhood design of metropolis. He graduated from Tongji University with Bachelor of Architecture and holds the degree of Master in Urban and Regional Planning from Tokyo Metropolis University. Prior to his current position, he was director of YAMA Architects & Partners. Participating in regional planning for several projects enriched his practical experience in this field, which helped him introduce such advantageous concepts into China. Daryl Fogal, Vice President, Engineering & Technology, Honeywell Building Solutions

Daryll Fogal is the Vice President of Engineering & Technology for Honeywell Building Solutions, a business unit of Honeywell International Inc.  In this role, he is responsible for product development and advanced research for Honeywell Building Solutions.  This includes developing new energy conservation measures for the Energy Services business within HBS. Daryll has been with Honeywell for 11 years and has served in a number of management and technical roles.  Prior to his current appointment, Daryll served as Global Technology Leader for Honeywell Process Solutions and a director of project operations in Honeywell Process Solutions, helping deliver automation systems to refining and paper customers. 

Daryll completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Queen’s University in Canada.

John W. Lauer, General Director, Sloan Valve Water Technologies (Suzhou) Co., Ltd.

As the General Director of Sloan Valve Water Technologies, a division of the Sloan Valve Company (USA), Mr. Lauer has been responsible for establishing Sloan’s globally recognized commercial plumbing products in the China market.  Mr. Lauer joined Sloan Valve Company in 1984 as a Product Development Engineer and has held numerous positions within the company since.  As Sloan’s Director of Technical Support during the 1990’s Mr. Lauer served on many of the US technical committees that developed the first performance requirements for water efficient plumbing products.  Mr. Lauer has been an active participant in the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute (PMI), the US trade association for plumbing manufacturers, and was president of that organization in 2005.  Mr. Lauer first visited China in 1990.  His involvement in China’s plumbing industry grew when he became Sloan’s Director of International Business Development in 2002.  Mr. Lauer has a bachelor’s degree in Product Design & Development from Southern Illinois University and an MBA from Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Don Newlon, Vice President, Air Conditioning Marketing for Emerson Climate Technologies Asia. 

Don Newlon is responsible for all air conditioning marketing activities for both residential and commercial air conditioning business.  He also leads the development and execution of Emerson Climate Technologies’ market / customer / new technology initiatives, demand management & forecasting, price management, eBusiness, and coordinating planning processes.

Don’s skills and global experience in the HVAC industry and business makes him well suited for this role.  He began career with Copeland in 1992 as an Advanced Manufacturing engineer (was instrumental in the launch of open-drive scroll as well as Copeland’s first marine scroll product line).  Don then moved into Product Engineering as a Senior Product Engineer, and then onto Product Planning.  Afterwhich, he transferred to Marketing in charge of Industrial and Transportation markets before becoming General Manager of CopelandBitzer, our joint venture for screw compressors.

Don has a BSME from University of Cincinnati and a MBA from the Ohio State University.

Yang Liming, Product marketing manager, Carrier China

Mr. Yang Liming, Product marketing manager in Carrier China Distribution, leads the marketing activities for product promotion and system application in China market. He joined Carrier in 1997 and worked in several positions including Product Engineering and Commercial Sales Distribution. Mr. Yang received a Master’s degree in Refrigeration and Cryogenics Engineering from the Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1997 and bachelor’s degree in Refrigeration and Cryogenics Engineering from University of Shanghais for Sciences and Technology in 1994. He is currently pursuing an MAB degree in Fudan University. 

Manfred Koenigslehner, Technical Director Asia-Pacific, Geberit

As Technical Director of Geberit Asia Pacific, Mr. Manfred Koenigslehner is responsible for technical sales support, product and systems standardization and training and public relations. Mr. Koenigslehner joined Geberit in 1976 as engineer in the development department. He has held numerous positions in development, production and engineering as senior manager in the Geberit Group. Mr. Koenigslehner was member of the development group for the CADMOULD/CADFORM process simulation software at the Technical University IKV in Aachen, Germany, was founding member of the Swiss National Plastic Education and Technology Transfer Centre in Aarau, Switzerland and was guest lecturer in several technical colleges in Switzerland.He is currently member of various standardization committees and is active in the board of the Water supply and Water usage Association in China. Manfred graduated from the Austrian Federal Technical College TGM as Engineer for Plastic Technology and in Enterprise Management from a post graduate study at IBZ Cadre and Management Schools, Brugg, Switzerland.

Roger Frechette, Director of MEP Engineering, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

Roger Frechette is the Director in charge of Building Services and Sustainable Engineering for SOM Chicago. He is a registered professional and mechanical engineer with over 20 years of experience in the MEP industry. Mr. Frechette is currently leading SOM engineering teams for the Burj Dubai, planned as the world’s tallest building and man-made structure, as well as the low-energy, high-performance Pearl River Tower, currently under construction in Guangzhou, China. His work includes a diverse group of projects ranging from laboratories, airports, hospitals, academic buildings, and corporate offices to government buildings and museums. Mr. Frechette is a Senior Fellow with the Design Futures Council—a global network of design community professionals, and frequently speaks about High Performance Design and Green Engineering at various educational seminars. In 2002, he co-authored “Nantucket Principals,” focusing on the trends and issues that will influence green building and sustainable design in the future; in 2004, Mr. Frechette received U.S. Congressional recognition for his work in building sustainability.

Dr. Jean-Baptiste Monnier, Senior Vice-President, Bentley Asia Pacific

Architects, engineers, constructors, and owner-operators are indispensable in improving our world and our quality of life; the company’s mission is to improve the performance of their projects and of the assets they design, build, and operate. Prior to working in the software industry, Dr. Monnier’s research work and PhD thesis were dedicated to advances in Solar Cooling systems at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.

Dr. Raymond Yau, Director of Arup, Member of Arup’s Global Buildings Sector Board

Dr. Yau is a pre-eminent building physics specialist in built environment.  He has particular expertise in computational fluid dynamics and thermal modeling and has over 20 years of experience in applying the skills in modeling indoor air flow and environment, and external microclimate of built environment and in practicing building sustainability. Dr. Yau has led a number of pivotal consultancy studies for the HKSAR Government in shaping sustainable development of building construction in Hong Kong.  Dr. Yau introduced a pioneer design approach – microclimate study of public housing to HKHA, leading to design of sustainable community and award-winning projects. Dr. Yau is the building physics/sustainability team leader of Beijing 2008 Olympic National Stadium (Bird's Nest), China first sustainable Beijing High Speed Rail South Station, Beijing Parkview Green Building and Beijing Nokia BDA Campus that achieved LEED Gold performance.  He is among the pioneers in China to use LEED as tool to assess sustainability of building and planning projects. He is Vice Chair of ASHRAE Region XIII (Asia) and a trustee of the Ove Arup Foundation.

Wang Baohai, Vice Director, Shanghai Construction Energy Conservation Office

Mr. Wang is currently the Vice Director of Shanghai Construction Energy Conservation Office and Chairman of the Building Energy-Efficient Materials Branch of shanghai Building Material Industry Association (SBMIA). Mr. Wang. Has been involved in the planning, promotion and formulation of related standards and management regulations regarding energy conservation of buildings in Shanghai since 1990s. Before joining Shanghai Construction Energy Office, Mr. Wang had been Director of Shanghai New Type Wall Materials Development Office, Director of Shanghai Administration office of Building Materials Development and Application and Vice Director of Shanghai Municipal Construction Engineering Safety Quality Supervisory Center.

Mark Ginsberg, Senior Executive Board Member, EERE Board of Directors, U.S. Department of Energy

Mr. Mark Ginsberg was appointed by the Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) to serve on the newly created EERE Board of Directors. He and the Board direct EERE policy, strategies and budgets and serve as “ambassadors” for EERE.  As a senior executive advisor to the Assistant Secretary, his portfolio includes energy efficiency, renewable energy, and climate change technologies. Mr. Ginsberg served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Building Technology, State and Community Programs from 1997 to 2002. Previously, Mr. Ginsberg directed the Federal Energy Management Program, where he provided leadership for Federal agencies to reduce energy consumption $1 billion in their 500,000 buildings.  Prior to joining DOE, he served as Director of the Arizona Energy Office. He recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Alliance to Save Energy. To recognize his lifetime contributions, the U.S. Green Building Council established a permanent Ginsberg Fellowship in 2003.

Lang Siwei, Deputy Chief Engineer, Institute of Air Conditioning, China Academy of Building Research

Mr. Lang Siwei, Professor, Deputy Chief Engineer, Institute of Air Conditioning of China Academy of Building Research. During 1992 to 2002 he was Director of the Institute of Air Conditioning. From the early 1980s, Mr. Lang has been engaged in R & D of energy efficiency technology for HVAC and acted as a leader to take charge key projects and develop energy efficiency design standards for residential and commercial buildings.

Mr. Lang is also Deputy Director, Building Energy Efficiency Export Committee, Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China, Vice President, China Building Energy Efficiency Association, and President, National Technical Committee of Standardization of HVAC Equipment & Clean Room Equipment. He graduated from Tong-Ji University, majored in HVAC.

Zhang Ruiying, Program Director for Buildings, China Sustainable Energy Program, The Energy Foundation

Ms. Ruiying Zhang is the Program Director for Buildings of China Sustainable Energy Program (CSEP), a partnership of David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and The Energy Foundation. The mission of CSEP program is to assist in China’s transition to a sustainable energy future by promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy. As the senior program officer, Ruiying Zhang is in charge of CSEP’s building energy efficiency program, which supports Chinese government to develop and implement appliance standards & labels, building codes, and green building initiatives.
Ms. Zhang received her bachelor in Energy and Power Engineering, and Master in Economics. She was a senior engineer in electric power sector and has more than 20 years working experience in energy technology, energy and energy efficiency policy, and foreign investment policy. Before joining the Energy Foundation, Ruiying Zhang had been working at Power Economic Research Institute of former Ministry of Electric Power Industry, the former State Planning Commission and China Energy Conservation Investment Corporation.

Panel Discussion VI – Going Global: Perspectives from Green Building Leaders from Around the World

Dr. Sadek Owainati, Founder, Board Member and Past Chair, Emirates Green Building Council

Dr. Sadek Owainati is an engineering consultant with more than 40 years experience in various fields of the construction industry. Dr. Owainati served the previous 4 years as the Deputy General Manager of Al Naboodah Contracting, a leading contracting company in the UAE. Prior to that, he was Projects Director with Arkiteknik International Consulting Engineers (Dubai). Dr. Owainati is one of the Founders of Emirates Green Building Council, a not-for-profit organization established in July 2006 promoting the transformation of buildings in the UAE to become a sustainable built-environment. He was elected in April 2007 as Chair of the Council until July 08. During 1991-93, Sadek studied and worked in the field of environmental engineering in California. He served among World Bank experts on projects related to Environmental Management in Jordan during 1995-96. Dr. Owainati graduated with distinction as a civil engineer in 1966. He obtained his Masters from University of Manchester (UK) and in 1973 received his Ph.D. from Imperial College of Science & Technology, University of London.
