The Empire State Building Energy Retrofit: A Replicable Model

A team of real estate, energy and environmental experts analyzed more than 60 potential energy efficiency strategies at the Empire State Building to identify eight projects that would produce the greatest energy savings and carbon reduction at the lowest cost.  When complete, the $20 million retrofit will reduce energy use by 38 percent, saving $4.4 million per year. The team’s vision from the outset was to share its tools and results for other owners to follow in making their buildings more energy efficient.  Program Manager Ray Quartararo will discuss the collaborative process and innovative strategies, including ways to engage tenants in energy efficiency and a unique window refurbishment program.
